A temporary, short-term refuge centre designed to protect people during the predicted peak wind period of Tropical Cyclone Alfred will be open today from 7am.

Located at the RNA Showgrounds in Bowen Hills, the shelter will accept residents until 12pm Thursday March 6 before being locked down.

Brisbane City Council encouraged residents to stay with friends and family in the first instance, and only consider the refuge shelter as a last resort as it has basic amenities and will not have beds, cooking facilities or catering.

Those heading to the showgrounds are asked to bring non-perishable food and water if possible, and personal identification as they will be required to fill in registration forms.

People evacuating on Thursday were reminded to check current alters and road conditions and avoid driving through flood water.
