Man charged over crash which killed two-year-old in Smethwick

A 30-year-old man has been charged with causing a crash which claimed the life of a two-year-old boy.

Sharjeel Shahzad was arrested on Monday following the two-car collision in Smethwick, West Midlands, on Saturday evening.

He has also been charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving with no insurance and failing to stop after a collision.

A woman aged 29 and a 30-year-old man who were in the same vehicle as the boy remain in a serious condition in hospital.

The crash happened on Dartmouth Road.

The boy and the adults were in a Toyota Auris when it was in collision with a Porsche Cayenne just before 23:00 GMT.

Mr Shahzad has been remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
