New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week

It can be tricky keeping track of which movies release each week, especially with the holiday season ushering in a tidal wave of awards films and four-quadrant blockbusters. With a new slate of titles coming in 2025, check out what is coming to theaters in January over the holidays.

After the Christmas holiday saw adult fare like “Babygirl,” “A Complete Unknown” and “Nosferatu” take up space in multiplexes, the first weekend of January looks to be a bit quieter after New Year’s Day. As is common in January, a horror outing — in this case “The Damned,” in limited release — is opening up the new year. Thordur Palsson (“The Valhalla Murders”) directs a 19th-century story about a shipwreck that leaves a crew having to make a fateful choice that leaves them riddled with guilt.

“Vermiglio,” the Italian World War II family drama that recently made the Oscars shortlist for Best International Film and “The Count of Monte Cristo,” a French drama that follows Edmond Dantes as he escapes imprisonment and assumes the titular figure of Count of Monte-Cristo, are both expanding to more theaters.

Palestine’s Oscar entry this year, “From Ground Zero,” is releasing in limited release after making the Best International Film shortlist and is comprised of 22 short films made in Gaza during the occupation. Meanwhile, fans of classic cinema can check out David Fincher’s “Se7en” (1995) in a limited IMAX engagement for the film’s 30th anniversary.

If you’re looking for more family-suited fare, catching up on Thanksgiving releases like “Wicked” and “Moana 2” and the most recent “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” may be the best bet for children.

Check back each week to find the latest releases in theaters, from major wide releases to niche independent titles.
